Pharmacy Shadowing

Students shadowing infectious disease (ID) pharmacist, Dr. Joshua Garcia, will gain firsthand exposure to the critical role pharmacists play in managing infectious diseases and supporting antimicrobial stewardship.

Students will observe clinical ID rounds with the ID physician* and ID pharmacists (when available), observe pharmacists and pharmacy student evaluation and intervention of patients on antibiotics via antimicrobial stewardship, and observe patient case discussion of P4 pharmacy students on their clinical ID rotations (when available), gaining insight into their experience.

Students shadowing psychiatric pharmacist Dr. Tiffany Khieu will be exposed to the unique role of pharmacists in medication management in an inpatient psychiatric setting. Commonly treated psychiatric illnesses include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Under the supervision of Dr. Khieu, students will walk through the psychiatric unit's milieu and observe daily activities. Students will observe the pharmacist's assessment and intervention of patient-specific medications, as well as patient case discussions by P4 pharmacy students and pharmacy residents on their psychiatry rotation (when available).

Students shadowing the clinical pharmacists at Ketchum Health, a family medicine clinic, will gain firsthand exposure to the important role ambulatory care pharmacists play in a primary care setting. During their shadowing experience, students will observe clinical pharmacists, Dr. Diana Roman and Dr. Joycelyn Yamzon, as well as P4 pharmacy students, during patient visits and interdisciplinary case discussions.

Students will observe pharmacists, address medication, and access insurance-related issues. This experience highlights how pharmacists collaborate with MDs and PAs to deliver comprehensive, team-based patient care in an ambulatory care setting.
